Leap Year Benefits: More Time for Sampling and Planning

Co-Founders Erin and Ilene

It is the end of February and we sure are thankful that we got one extra day this year! Starting up a new business on top of our full time jobs makes for a wonderful crazy life. This bonus day couldn’t have come at a better time.

As we reflect back on this month, we are incredibly grateful for our new retail partners like Kowalski’s and Lakewinds. We love going into the stores and seeing OnUp beautifully displayed on shelf. We’ve spent hours in the stores providing free samples to shoppers and continue to be encouraged by all the positive feedback. Building a new brand, especially with a product that most people aren’t already familiar with, requires time and commitment. We are thankful for local partners who continue to demonstrate their belief in OnUp.

We also spent much of February planning for the future. Most immediately, we are working on our spring and summer plans for when the Twin Cities come alive with fitness events and farmers markets. The few recent warm days make us so excited for spring!

From a longer term planning perspective, we completed our Round 2 submission for the Notre Dame McCloskey New Venture Competition. The late nights and early mornings required to complete a 15 page three year business plan made us feel like we were back in business school again and preparing for finals. The biggest difference, however, is that this business plan isn’t just an educational exercise. It is real life. Going through this process forced us to think through many of our assumptions and put our ideas on paper. It’s hard work. While we’re sure that most of our assumptions will be wrong (who expects to get everything correct on the first try?....if we did, we should be doing something else with our lives), we are in a much better place today than we were at the beginning of the month. It will be fun to go back in three years and compare the plan with reality.

OnUp is also continuing to expand in the Twin Cities. In February we added new partners like Tim & Tom’s Speedy Market in the Como neighborhood and Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping in the North Loop. Stay tuned in March for announcements on several more gym partnerships.

Happy Leap Day from the OnUp team!
